Pictures on Packs

In an effort to help curb the Brits appetite for cigarettes, the UK has unveiled a series of 15 disturbing images and slogans that will be printed on cigarette boxes starting in October 2008. By slapping on pictures of throat cancer and blackened lungs, the government hopes to send a stronger message to smokers beyond just the warning label. According to Health Secretary Alan Johnson, tobacco is the number one cause of death and illness in the UK, killing over 120,000 people this year, which works out to more than 13 people an hour!

This is more scare tactics employed by the Government to stop people from smoking.
I dont know how effective these pictures will be in stopping hardcore smokers to stop smoking (probably not very).  Everyone knows that smoking is not healthy, will the actual visualization of these harmful effects change peoples minds is yet to be seen. However these images do not account for the power addiction has over smokers. It would be like trying to get heroin addicts off heroin by showing them pictures of the damage heroin does, they already know probably better than most of the dangers as do smokers with what they cough up every morning in sink may be some indication.
